There’s a new program taking place in Worchester, Massachusetts that is helping those who are in wheelchairs. The program, REquipment, takes used but durable medical equipment that is less than six years old and refurbishes it. Then, the renovated device is made available to anyone who may need it in the State of Massachusetts.
The idea comes from the fact that many individuals needs durable medical equipment just to get out of bed. However, a person may encounter delays or obstacles when waiting on their insurance company to approve the specific piece of equipment.
Jointly sponsored by Massachusetts Rehabilitation and the Department of Developmental Services, the REquipment program allows recipients to use these pieces of equipment for no charge. As well, you will be permitted to keep and use the equipment for as long as you need it. Insurance is not involved, giving a variety of people, even those who are homeless, an opportunity to receive the equipment they need to lead a safer and fuller life.
Charles Carr, the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commissioner, has noted that 81 devices have been collected through REquipment, with 54 pieces being refurbished and given out to individuals. Carr also uses a motorized wheelchair for mobility.
REquipment has worked with a range of pieces, such as: both manual and power wheelchairs, tub seats, lifts, rolling walkers, scooters, standing frames, shower chairs, and portable ramps. Once the equipment has been refurbished and is appropriate for use, pictures are taken and put online. It is then that individuals can complete a form and request the specific piece of equipment. And though delivery is only currently available in eastern and central Massachusetts, the program is currently seeking funding to expand their delivery territory statewide.
Helping Others
Anyone can clearly see that the idea behind REquipment isn’t only helpful and inspirational, but quite selfless, as well. Remember, we all need help from time to time. Are you doing your part to help out?
