A New Kind of Challenge

Over the weekend, various members of the Fresno Police Department Traffic Bureau took on a new kind of challenge — a game of wheelchair basketball.

During this game, the officers played against the Fresno Wheelers at Peoples Church. Though all members of both teams followed the rules of a traditional basketball game, everyone who participated in the game played from a wheelchair.

For the win, the Wheelers beat the officers — 28-16. Even though the law enforcement team acknowledged the fact that they took a beating, the Wheelers remained humble about their impressive win. The law enforcement team notes how impressive the Wheelers played, commenting on their abilities to shoot, dribble, and really put up a good fight.

Members of the Adaptive Sports Program at Children’s Hospital Central California are also part of the Fresno Wheelers. Impressively enough, this group plays for charity. All proceeds from the game go back to the hospital.

Lend a Helping Hand

Have you been inspired by the story mentioned above. As you already know, it’s quite important to help others in need — everyone needs help at some point in their life. If you want to get involved with a charity or fundraiser, contact your local community center and see what options are currently available. If there isn’t currently an event taking place that is close to you, then consider starting your own. For example, if you want to raise money and give back, use your imagination and skills to come up with a fundraiser. You could create a bake sale, start a silent auction, or simply ask for donations. It’s important to remember that every little bit helps.

If you wish to do something more active, then create a game or tournament like the one detailed above. Not only can you use include athletes who are really in wheelchairs, but those who aren’t in wheelchairs can still participate. Most importantly, remember to have fun and enjoy yourself.
