Greg Abbott is officially ready to take office on January 20th – his office and living quarters already accommodate his wheelchair needs.
In Texas, the Governor’s Mansion has already undergone extensive refurbishing since the arsonist attack that took place in 2008. The $25 million reconstruction included making this home completely compliant with the Americans With Disabilities Act. This renovation was officially completed in 2012 and added a 1,500 square foot extension at the rear of the house. This extension provides a room elevator for not only the master bedroom, but the kitchen, as well.
The overall goal was to meet codes so that future revamps wouldn’t have to take place. However, there are a few changes that are currently being made. For example, the second floor, east-facing balcony has a five-inch step down. Therefore, a ramp that will make accessibility easier is being fashioned and placed into the home. As well, temporary ramps are being placed at the podiums for the presiding officers in the House and Senate.
Facts about Americans With Disabilities Act
This act officially became effective in 1990. Disabilities may include both mental and physical medical conditions; a condition does not need to be deemed “severe” or “permanent” to be a disability. Specifically, this law prohibits discrimination based on disability. As well, the Americans With Disabilities Act requires that employers provide reasonable accommodations to employees with disabilities.
There have been famous cases involving this act throughout history, including: National Federation of the Blind v. Target Corporation, Board of Trustees of the University of Alabama v. Garett, and Barden v. The City of Sacramento.
