The CReATE program, part of Utah State University’s Assistive Technology Program, has provided more than 150 wheelchairs over the past 18 months for those who are in need.  Specifically, this program recycles wheelchairs for people with disabilities.

The CReATE program takes older, donated power wheelchairs and manual wheelchairs and then puts them back into working order. With Medicaid or private insurance groups, those who are disabled may have to wait years to get their chair replaced or fixed. The CReATE progam makes chaise available with absolutely no eligibility requirements.

As of now, rebuilt wheelchairs cost around five hundred dollars, while rebuilt manual chairs go for about one hundred and fifty dollars. However, assistance is available for those who cannot afford the stated fees.

Coordinator, Tom Boman, enjoys helping others gain independence, autonomy, and self-confidence. After all, many rely on their wheelchair for mobility purposes. Therefore, if a person’s chair is out of commission, the owner will most likely be unable to properly get around.

Helping Others

It’s been stated many times, but the fact remains true: helping others is very important. You may not be able to rebuild a wheelchair, but there are plenty of different ways to help those who are in need. For example, you can simply donate your time.

Getting involved in volunteer work won’t cost you any money and (most likely) won’t require you to build anything. Depending on the area in which you live in, you may be able to volunteer for a variety of tasks. For example, you can volunteer at a school for the disabled or a nursing home. If these options don’t exists, then consider placing an ad in the local paper. You can run errands, clean, or even volunteer to cook. Just remember this: it doesn’t matter how you choose to help someone,  just as long as you do lend a helping hand.
