When a person in a wheelchair wants to drive, he/she will need to have a wheelchair accessible vehicle. Fortunately, these types of vehicles are becoming more and more common in our society as new innovations/technologies are developed to give those with limited mobility more freedom. These different types of wheelchair accessible vehicles come in all kinds of sizes and modes of transportation. Here is a short list of the different types.

Choosing a Vehicle

  1. Conversion Vans: One of the most common handicap access vehicles is the conversion van. These vans have a lot of room, where the chair ramp, chair lift, and even customizable driver’s area can be positioned without any problem. Additionally, conversion vans have been popular among people looking for a vehicle to travel in without driving a large RV for a long time. Furthermore, people in wheelchairs have the same luxuries with a conversion van such as TV, water, sleeping and seating areas.
  2. Minivans: The more compact minivan is really a new thing, which many people are starting to turn to. The main reason people are choosing this option is that minivans cost a lot less than other options, such as conversion vans. However, since the minivans are smaller in size, there is obviously going to be less room; that said, something like a Town & Country from Chrysler, or a Dodge Grand Caravan still have plenty of room, so you’ll never feel too cramped.
  3. Sports Utility Vehicles: SUVs are popular among all kinds of people from all kinds of places. There are a few larger sport utility vehicles, such as a Suburban or a Ford Excursion, which can be modified with a wheelchair lift. The biggest modification will have to deal with the side doors, but there are plenty of people who want to have the joy of driving an SUV, yet are confined to a wheelchair.
  4. Recreational Vehicles: This is an obvious option, given the usual size and space RVs provide. RVs are usually fully accessible to wheelchairs. The only problem with this option is that no one would actually use an RV as a commuting vehicle. Nevertheless, RVs can still be a great option when traveling.

Did You Find a Vehicle?

If you look closely, the modern world is actually a lot more wheelchair friendly than we would ever assume. You should have no problem finding a vehicle to fit your specific needs.
