Wheelchair Cars – The Kenguru
Published: February 20, 2014
In addition to wheelchair vans, in some parts of the country, it's possible to purchase a wheelchair-compatible car as well. These vehicles are designed with the wheelchair user in mind; they provide easy access, have controls that are suited to individuals with below-waist disabilities, and are practical and affordable.
If you are dependent on a wheelchair and are seeking mobile transportation designed around your needs, you may want to consider this type of vehicle.
A Car Built with the Wheelchair User in Mind
One popular manufacturer of wheelchair cars is a company called Kenguru. This vehicle, which is electrically powered, is slowly being introduced in countries throughout the world. Small, compact, environmentally friendly, and wonderfully suited to wheelchair users, it provides a more affordable (and in many cases better) alternative to traditional conversion vans. Its features are many:
- A roll-in access ramp via a rear hatch
- An absence of traditional seats
- Center seating for one wheelchair
- A small size for ease of parking and maneuvering
- An electric motor that provides 60 miles of range
- Manufactured in Austin, Texas
Though the Kenguru isn't capable of highway travel – its top speed is roughly 30mph – it makes an ideal commuter for urban areas and for persons who don't need to access a freeway to get to work. However, it is important to note that with its limitations, the Kenguru isn't for everyone. Some people, particularly those that routinely travel on the freeway or who lack the means of charging an electric vehicle, will likely want to look elsewhere. That being said, for disabled individuals who are seeking personal mobility, and whose needs are met by this vehicle, it may be a better choice than public transportation or traditional wheelchair vans.
